Post-Surgery Rehab: What To Expect

Why Post-Surgery Rehabilitation Matters

Surgery addresses the structural problem, but physiotherapy is often what determines how well and how quickly you regain movement, strength and confidence afterward. At 365 Physiotherapy, we support patients recovering from a range of procedures, including joint replacements, ligament reconstructions and spinal surgery, both in clinic and via home visits.

The General Phases of Recovery

Every surgery and surgeon's protocol is different, but rehabilitation typically follows a similar structure:

### 1. Early / Protection Phase

Focus on protecting the surgical site, managing swelling and pain, and gentle movement within the limits set by your surgeon.

### 2. Restoring Movement

Gradually regaining range of motion in the joint or area, using guided exercises and manual therapy.

### 3. Building Strength

Progressive strengthening of the muscles around the surgical site as healing allows.

### 4. Return to Function

Working toward your specific goals — walking without aids, climbing stairs, returning to work, sport or hobbies.

What Your First Session Involves

  • Reviewing your surgeon's notes and any movement restrictions
  • Assessing swelling, wound healing status, and current range of motion
  • Gentle, guided movement within safe limits
  • Education on what to expect and what to avoid at this stage
  • Setting realistic short and long-term goals

  • Conditions We Commonly Support

  • Hip and knee replacements
  • ACL and other ligament reconstructions
  • Shoulder surgery (rotator cuff repair, stabilisation)
  • Spinal surgery
  • General post-operative deconditioning

  • Signs To Report To Your Surgeon

Physiotherapy supports your recovery, but some symptoms need medical review rather than physio treatment:

  • Increasing redness, warmth or swelling at the surgical site
  • Fever
  • Sudden, severe pain that is different from your expected recovery pain
  • Wound discharge

  • Why Choose Home Visit or Clinic Rehab With Us

  • Home visits available — ideal in the early stages when travel is difficult
  • Senior physiotherapists only
  • Structured plans aligned with your surgeon's protocol
  • Flexible scheduling as you progress from home visits to clinic sessions
